GRAHAM SLATER REMEMBERS:
I feel very fortunate that I met Sensei Stan when he came to Australia although I have known of him, years before.
Thanks to his movies, books and articles in
Terry O'Neill's Fighting Arts Magazines he became well known and respected.
Sensei Stan has had thousands of students with some training with him for decades and leading schools for him and the
SA JKA association.
I feel most privileged not having to share him so much with others, due to a time when he was semi-retired from mainstream teaching. In the early 2000s until his untimely passing, I was his private student, training at his home each week.
I came seeking a new Sensei having been involved in martial arts for over three decades previously, I found the perfect one for me.
Having studied a number of karate styles along with other martial arts, I found it very refreshing for Sensei not to show me things just one way.
He allowed me to experiment with techniques / katas and add my own personality / philosophy into our training.
Sensei was always working on a project, it may have been a book, a series of techniques, collaborating with other Senseis to redefine / develop his own arts and planning his next family holiday.
It was the way he conducted himself with courtesy, respect and never talking ill of anyone that
helped me develop better character.
We had so many great chats after every session which included many stories of his life, the challenges, injuries, facing the strongest karateka of the world and so much more.
I could talking about him for a long time so I will leave it here for you add your bit.
I will be releasing all the interview sessions / training sessions I have had with Sensei.
This will hopefully help us to continue to learning from the great man, Sensei Stan Schmidt –
God Bless.
